Wait… So What Does ‘Off The Grid’ Mean?

— Chinese Proverb.

There seems to be a million different definitions out there but to keep it simple and summarised, living ‘off the grid’ generally means not relying on public utilities; electricity, gas, water & sewer. It’s about creating a lifestyle that relies less on consuming the world’s resources and focuses more on ecofriendly, self-sustainability.

The way in which each household lives off grid varies depending on what they choose and also what’s feasible for them. For example, some people may only choose to live off the electricity grid but keep all other mains connected, or they may have sewer connected but are off grid for everything else (or any other combination of off grid/on grid for the utilities mentioned above).

Some people also aim to rely completely on themselves in terms of their food, only using what they have produced, grown, raised, harvested etc. People living this off grid lifestyle often do not have a typical ‘job’ but work for themselves to sustain their lifestyle.

Then there’s the people that go next level, no contact with the outside world.
